10 Songs I Freakin Love

10 Songs I Freakin Love

Nowadays, when most people are ill, they visit a doctor to find out what is going on, and how they can fix it. Often times, the doctor will prescribe some sort of pharmaceutical pill to “solve” the illness. I truly believe that “musical medicine” can be equally or even more efficient at treating certain ailments like depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and more. Here is a quote that resonates deeply with me :

“Music that heals is music that makes you feel. It cuts through the ego mind and goes straight to the soul of your being. It activates things within you that you had forgotten about or didn’t know even existed. It is a 100% cellular activation and possible opportunity for cellular reprogramming. It is a support system meant to offer a place of belonging, comfort, empowerment, inspiration and encouragement. It is a technology in and of itself that has been around for thousands of years and utilized by ancient civilizations, to heal, attune and open the body, so that the spirit can flourish.” ~ Monique Benabou (from a Huffington Post article)

Straight up, each of these songs has impacted me in a unique and profound way. It is my great delight to pass along these gems, and potentially introduce you to some ridiculously awesome moozicians. All of them are completely unique, so please explore each one’s special medicine :)

1.  Just This - Birdtalker

This grassroots, soulful folk band makes me feel at home around a campfire multi-instrument jam session. I recommend the “OurVinyl Sessions” version on YouTube. And if you dig this song, also check out “Heavy.”

2.  All Nations Rise - Lyla June

I am grateful to personally know Lyla. We met during a Spoken Word workshop at an Indigenous Wisdom Conference back in 2012 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Since then, we’ve shared just a few, but very quality times together. She blows me away with her endless dedication to serving the Great Spirit of life with her magnificent poetic writings, speeches, and pure presence.

3.  River - Leon Bridges

I’ve literally cried my eyes out to this song on numerous occasions. For some reason, this song helps me sob better than nearly any other tune in existence. I’m eternally grateful for Leon creating this exquisitely healing piece of music.

4. Now Here - I-Star

These are my dear homies from Asheville aka Ash-lantis, North Carolina. Not only do they make epic music, but they make amazing CHOCOLATE (Silvermoon Chocolates).

5.  Sowa - Fatoumata Diawara

I feel very connected to the Motherland aka Africa. I visited southern Africa for 2 weeks when I was 13, and it profoundly impacted my life. When I hear Fatoumata sing this song it taps me into some deep part of my soul that feels a direct connect to Africa.

6. Holy River - Lobo Marino

Wow. This song is epic. I invite you to drop whatever you are doing, and let this song wash over you.

7.   Imaginal Self - Diana Carr

Diana is a soul sister of mine, who I “met” (Electric Bill believes we knew each other on another planet or some kinda past life) at Lightning in a Bottle Festival back in 2012. She is a remarkable songwriter, singer, and shamaness. This song speaks volumes, and I’ll let you receive its medicine for yourself :)

8.  Gajamaru - Yaima

Boom! - Yet another megadose of musical medicine. I’m so grateful that Yaima allowed me to utilize this song for my “Unlocking Our Superpowers Book Trailer” video.

 9.  Crew Love - Sarah Solstice

This is one of my favorite dance songs, with an awesome, conscious, uplifting message. All Sarah’s music is wondrous, and this is a prime example.

10.  Into The Wild - Shylah Ray

Shylah is one of my homies from when I lived out in Ojai, CA. She is a Super-shero, magic mama. She’s a midwife, and an absolutely powerful, prophetic, soul-shaking singer. This song activates my primal spirit, and the video is equally profound.
